Lysmata amboinensis, commonly known as the Cleaner Shrimp, is a highly sought-after invertebrate for marine aquariums due to its fascinating cleaning behaviour and reef-safe nature. This large variant is particularly striking with its bright red and white banded body and long white antennae.
Feeding: Lysmata amboinensis is omnivorous and will readily accept a variety of foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and specialised invertebrate pellets. They also benefit from the natural parasites and dead tissue they remove from fish in the aquarium.
Compatibility: This species is peaceful and compatible with most reef-safe fish and invertebrates. It is best kept singly or in pairs to avoid territorial disputes. Avoid housing with aggressive fish that may prey on shrimps.
Reef Safety: Yes, Lysmata amboinensis is considered reef safe and will not harm corals or sessile invertebrates.
Care Requirements: Maintain stable water parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and good water quality. Moderate water flow is ideal to mimic their natural reef environment. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and cleaning stations.
Placement: Position in a well-established reef tank with ample hiding places. They often set up cleaning stations on prominent rocks or coral branches where fish can visit.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 7 cm (approximately 2.75 inches).
Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (20 gallons) recommended to provide sufficient space and stable conditions.
