Lobophyllia spp., commonly known as Lobophyllia or Brain Coral, are popular large polyp stony (LPS) corals prized for their bold colours and distinctive fleshy polyps. This extra large specimen offers a dramatic focal point for mature reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to maintain vibrant colours without causing bleaching. LED or T5 lighting systems with adjustable intensity work well.
Water Flow: Provide low to moderate water flow to ensure adequate nutrient delivery while preventing tissue damage from strong currents.
Placement: Position on the substrate or lower rockwork with sufficient space around it to avoid aggression towards neighbouring corals. Lobophyllia spp. can extend sweeper tentacles, so maintain at least 10cm clearance.
Care Level: Suitable for intermediate to advanced hobbyists due to size and care requirements.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae but benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or coral-specific liquid foods 1-2 times per week.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fast-growing SPS species.
Regular water parameter monitoring and stable conditions are essential for long-term health.
