Histrio histrio, commonly known as the large frogfish, is a remarkable ambush predator prized for its extraordinary camouflage and intriguing behaviour. This species is a captivating addition to a mature marine aquarium, particularly for enthusiasts with experience in keeping specialised predatory fish.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its specialised diet and predatory nature, Histrio histrio is best suited for aquarists familiar with marine fish requiring live or meaty foods.
Temperament and Compatibility: This frogfish is generally solitary and territorial. It is predatory and may consume smaller tankmates, so it is recommended to keep it with larger, non-aggressive species or in a species-specific setup. Avoid housing with small fish or invertebrates that can be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Requires a diet of live or frozen meaty foods such as small fish, crustaceans, and shrimp. Feeding should be done carefully to ensure nutritional needs are met and to prevent overfeeding.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate space for natural behaviour and to reduce stress.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient, mimicking shaded reef environments. Water flow should be low to moderate to replicate natural habitats and to avoid stressing the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock and hiding places to allow the frogfish to camouflage and ambush prey effectively. Placement should prioritise areas with subdued lighting and minimal current.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches).
Reef Safety: With Caution. Due to its predatory nature, Histrio histrio may consume small invertebrates and fish, so it is not fully reef safe.
