Herpolitha limax (Orange) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral from the Fungiidae family, prized for its elongated, slug-like shape and vivid orange coloration. This extra large specimen makes a dramatic focal point in mature reef aquaria.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal, such as LED or T5 fixtures providing a PAR range of approximately 50-150. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water movement is best to ensure adequate gas exchange and waste removal without damaging the coral’s delicate tissue.
Placement: Place on sandy or rubble substrate where it can fully expand without competition. Allow ample space from neighbouring corals to avoid aggressive interactions or stinging.
Care Level: Intermediate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and careful monitoring.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from occasional target feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or coral-specific liquid supplements.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution; maintain adequate spacing to prevent coral warfare.
Additional Notes: This species is not tank-bred and is best suited to established marine tanks with stable conditions. Regular water testing and maintenance will support long-term health.
