Heliofungia actiniformis, commonly known as the Plate Coral or Mushroom Coral, is a spectacular large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its striking two-tone colouration and impressive size. This XXL specimen offers a dramatic focal point for mature reef aquariums.
Originating from Indo-Pacific reefs, Heliofungia actiniformis is a free-living coral that can move slightly on the substrate. Its long, tentacle-like polyps create a captivating display, especially under moderate lighting.
Care and Husbandry
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, such as T5 fluorescents or LED systems with medium PAR levels. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
- Water Flow: Provide gentle to moderate water movement to mimic natural reef conditions and prevent detritus accumulation without damaging the delicate polyps.
- Placement: Place on a stable sandy or rubble substrate area with enough space around it. This coral requires ample room to expand its tentacles and should be spaced well away from aggressive neighbours to avoid stinging interactions.
- Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae but benefits from occasional target feeding of meaty foods such as brine shrimp or coral-specific liquid foods.
- Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing to prevent coral warfare.
- Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (30 gallons) or larger to accommodate its size and water quality needs.
Additional Notes
Heliofungia actiniformis is moderately sensitive to water quality fluctuations; stable parameters and regular maintenance are essential. It is not a beginner coral but rewarding for intermediate to advanced hobbyists seeking a dramatic centerpiece coral.
