Heliofungia actiniformis (Two Tone) is a spectacular large polyp stony (LPS) coral belonging to the Fungiidae family, prized for its distinctive two-tone colouring and long, flowing tentacle-like polyps. This species is a favourite among experienced marine aquarists looking to add movement and vibrancy to their reef tanks.
Known commonly as the mushroom coral, Heliofungia actiniformis is a free-living coral that does not attach permanently to the substrate, allowing it to be repositioned easily within the aquarium. Its large, fleshy polyps extend during the day, providing a captivating display.
Care and Husbandry
- Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae. LED or T5 lighting systems with a PAR range of approximately 100-200 µmol/m²/s are ideal.
- Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is best to prevent damage to the delicate polyps while ensuring adequate nutrient exchange.
- Placement: Place on sandy or fine rubble substrate to allow natural movement. Provide ample space from neighbouring corals to avoid aggression, as its tentacles can extend significantly.
- Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Heliofungia actiniformis benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week.
Additional Information
This coral is generally hardy but requires stable water parameters typical of reef aquaria: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and stable alkalinity and calcium levels. It is reef safe with adequate spacing, but care should be taken to avoid placing it near aggressive corals.
