Heliofungia actiniformis (Purple) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its unique appearance, featuring long, flowing tentacle-like polyps that resemble sea anemones. This small-sized specimen is an excellent addition to established marine reef aquariums, offering both visual appeal and moderate care requirements.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to maintain vibrant colouration and healthy growth. Avoid intense direct light which may cause bleaching.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow is ideal, allowing the tentacles to sway naturally without being damaged by strong currents.
Placement: Position this coral on the substrate or lower rockwork with ample space around it to prevent aggression or damage to neighbouring corals. Heliofungia actiniformis can extend its tentacles significantly, so maintain good spacing.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is generally reef safe with adequate spacing, but care should be taken to avoid placing it near aggressive corals that may sting or overshadow it.
Feeding: While Heliofungia actiniformis derives much of its nutrition from photosynthetic symbionts (zooxanthellae), supplemental feeding with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or coral-specific preparations can promote growth and vitality.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide stable water parameters and sufficient space for this coral to thrive.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels.
