Heliofungia actiniformis, commonly known as the mushroom coral or plate coral, is a solitary large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vibrant purple colour and distinctive tentacle-like polyps that resemble sea anemones. This large specimen offers a dramatic focal point in mature reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to maintain vibrant colouration and healthy growth. LED or T5 lighting systems that provide a balanced spectrum work well.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal. Strong currents can damage the delicate polyps, while stagnant water may reduce health.
Placement: Place on the substrate or lower rockwork with ample space around it to prevent aggression or damage from neighbouring corals. This species can extend long tentacles and requires room to expand fully.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. It is generally peaceful but can sting nearby corals if placed too close.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic through symbiotic zooxanthellae but benefits from occasional feeding of meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or specialised coral foods.
Care Level: Suitable for intermediate to advanced hobbyists due to its size and specific flow requirements.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Can reach up to 30 cm in diameter in captivity.
Minimum Tank Size: Recommended minimum tank size is 120 litres to accommodate its size and space needs.
