Heliofungia actiniformis (Gold) is a remarkable solitary large polyp stony (LPS) coral, prized for its distinctive appearance resembling a sea anemone with long, flowing tentacles. This large specimen displays a vibrant golden hue, making it a striking focal point in any mature reef aquarium.
Native to Indo-Pacific reefs, Heliofungia actiniformis requires stable water conditions and moderate lighting to thrive. It is best suited to experienced aquarists due to its size and specific care needs.
Care and Husbandry
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal, such as T5 fluorescents or LED setups providing 50-150 PAR. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
- Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water movement is recommended to mimic natural reef conditions and prevent sediment accumulation on the coral’s surface.
- Placement: Position on the substrate or lower rockwork with ample space around it to accommodate its extended tentacles and prevent aggression towards neighbouring corals.
- Feeding: While photosynthetic, Heliofungia actiniformis benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week.
- Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals that may sting or overshadow it.
Additional Information
This large Gold Heliofungia actiniformis specimen can reach up to 20 cm in diameter under optimal conditions. A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and stable water parameters.
Regular monitoring of water quality, including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is essential for healthy skeletal growth.
