Haemulon melanurum, commonly referred to as the Melanurum Snapper, is a visually striking tank-bred marine fish prized for its vibrant colours and peaceful nature. This medium-sized snapper is well-suited to experienced hobbyists maintaining medium to large marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate care is recommended, with stable water parameters and a spacious tank to accommodate its active swimming behaviour.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Haemulon melanurum coexists well with other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with overly territorial or aggressive fish to prevent stress.
Diet: This species thrives on a varied diet including high-quality frozen and live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with marine pellets or flakes to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space. Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity between 1.020-1.025 SG, and good water quality.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish comfortable and healthy.
Placement: Provide plenty of open swimming areas along with rockwork or artificial structures for shelter and resting spots.
Origin: Tank-bred in controlled aquaculture facilities, ensuring healthier specimens and reduced impact on wild populations.
Maximum Size: Typically reaches up to 20 cm (8 inches) in captivity.
