Goniopora spp. (Yellow) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its distinctive yellow polyps that gently sway in the aquarium current, adding dynamic movement and colour to your reef setup.
This tiny tank-bred specimen is suitable for marine aquarists with some experience in coral husbandry. Goniopora spp. require stable water parameters and consistent care to thrive.
Care Requirements
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, such as LED or T5 fixtures providing a PAR range of approximately 50-150 µmol/m²/s. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
- Water Flow: Gentle to moderate, indirect water flow helps keep the polyps extended without causing tissue damage.
- Placement: Position on a stable rock or substrate area with adequate space from neighbouring corals to prevent aggression. Ensure it is not shaded by other corals.
- Feeding: While Goniopora spp. can derive nutrition from photosynthesis via their symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplemental feeding with planktonic foods such as phytoplankton, rotifers, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week is beneficial.
Additional Information
Regular monitoring of water parameters—especially calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium—is essential for skeletal growth and overall health. Maintain stable temperature and salinity to reduce stress.
Due to their sensitivity and specific care needs, Goniopora spp. are best suited for intermediate to advanced hobbyists.
