Goniopora spp. (Common) are a genus of large polyp stony (LPS) corals prized for their unique appearance, featuring extended polyps that resemble delicate flowers. These corals add dynamic movement and vibrant texture to reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, such as T5 fluorescents or LED systems providing around 100-150 PAR. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow is ideal to ensure polyps can extend fully without damage. Strong currents may cause retraction or tissue stress.
Placement: Position Goniopora spp. in areas with stable water parameters and adequate space from neighbouring corals to prevent aggression. They benefit from placement on rockwork or substrate where polyps can freely extend.
Care Level: Intermediate. These corals require stable water chemistry, including consistent calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels, along with regular feeding of planktonic foods or coral-specific supplements to support growth.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals that may sting or overshadow them.
Additional Notes: Goniopora spp. are sensitive to sudden changes in water quality and benefit from routine monitoring. They are not tank-bred and typically sourced from wild populations, so acclimation should be gradual.
