Goniastrea spp. are robust large polyp stony (LPS) corals belonging to the family Faviidae. This premium medium-sized specimen offers vibrant colours and a textured appearance, making it a striking addition to any reef aquarium.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, ideally from LED or T5 fixtures providing a PAR range of 100-200 µmol/m²/s. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is preferred to keep the coral healthy and free from detritus accumulation without causing tissue damage.
Placement: Position the coral on a stable rockwork base with adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggression. Goniastrea spp. can extend sweeper tentacles, so allow at least 5-7 cm clearance.
Care Level: Suitable for intermediate aquarists due to its moderate care requirements and tolerance to varying conditions.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae but benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times weekly.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing to avoid coral warfare.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and stable alkalinity and calcium levels for optimal growth.
