The Forcipiger flavissimus, or Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its bright yellow body and characteristic long snout. This small-sized fish is a peaceful addition to mature reef aquariums, where it can thrive with proper care and environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, this butterflyfish coexists well with other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with overly territorial or predatory fish. It is suitable for reef tanks but may nip at certain coral polyps or small invertebrates, so caution is advised.
Diet: Omnivorous by nature, Forcipiger flavissimus requires a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, supplemented with algae-based preparations to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 US gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and stable water conditions. Mature, well-established reef systems with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots are ideal.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 specific gravity, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow and lighting suitable for reef aquaria support its health and natural behaviour.
Additional Care: This species can be shy initially and may require acclimation to captive diets. Regular monitoring and a stress-free environment will promote longevity and vibrant colouration.
