Favites spp. (Green) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its distinctive green hues and robust skeletal structure. As a member of the Faviidae family, this coral forms dense, rounded colonies with pronounced corallites, making it a striking centrepiece in mature reef aquariums.
Lighting: Favites spp. thrives under moderate lighting conditions. LED or T5 lighting systems providing a PAR range of approximately 50-150 µmol/m²/s are ideal. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is recommended to ensure adequate nutrient delivery while minimising tissue damage. Too strong a current can cause polyp retraction and stress.
Placement: Position Favites spp. on stable rockwork in the mid to lower regions of the aquarium. Ensure sufficient space around the coral to prevent aggressive interactions with neighbouring corals, as Favites spp. can extend sweeper tentacles.
Care Level: Due to its size and potential aggression, this coral is best suited for intermediate to advanced hobbyists with established reef systems.
Diet: Favites spp. benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week, alongside its photosynthetic nutrition.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing. Favites spp. can coexist with many reef inhabitants but requires careful placement to avoid coral warfare.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and consistent calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels to support skeletal growth.
