The Favia spp. (Red) is a premium large LPS coral prized for its bold red hues and distinctive polyp structure. As a member of the Faviidae family, this coral adds both texture and vibrant colour to established reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is recommended, such as T5 or LED fixtures providing a PAR range of approximately 100-200 µmol/m²/s. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water movement is ideal to ensure healthy polyp extension without causing tissue damage.
Placement: Position on stable rockwork in the middle to lower sections of the tank. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions, as Favia spp. can extend sweeper tentacles.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from occasional feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods to support growth.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing. Exercise caution when placing near more delicate or slow-growing corals.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters with calcium around 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm. Regular water changes and monitoring are recommended to support optimal health.
