Exallias brevis, commonly referred to as the Leopard Blenny, is a captivating addition to marine aquariums, prized for its distinctive spotted pattern and algae-grazing behaviour. This species is well-suited for reef tanks due to its generally peaceful temperament and reef-safe nature.
Care Level: Moderate – Exallias brevis requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank with plenty of live rock for grazing.
Temperament and Compatibility: This blenny is peaceful and can be kept with a variety of other non-aggressive fish species. It may exhibit territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar blennies, so caution is advised when housing multiple individuals.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, Exallias brevis feeds on algae and biofilm. Supplement its diet with high-quality marine algae, spirulina, and vegetable-based pellets or flakes to ensure optimal nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and grazing areas.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting supports algal growth for grazing, while moderate water flow mimics natural reef conditions and promotes fish health.
Placement: Provide ample live rock with crevices and surfaces for grazing and shelter. This species appreciates a well-structured environment to explore and establish territory.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 10 cm (4 inches).
