Euphyllia glabrescens, commonly known as the Reverse Holy Grail, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its unique reverse-coloured tentacles that add vibrant movement and texture to reef aquariums.
This tiny tank-bred specimen offers marine hobbyists an opportunity to introduce a rare and visually striking coral into their collection. As a member of the Euphyllidae family, it requires moderate care and attention to thrive.
Care and Husbandry
- Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended, ideally using LED or T5 fixtures that provide a balanced spectrum to support photosynthesis without causing bleaching.
- Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is best to gently sway the tentacles without causing tissue damage.
- Avoid strong direct currents that can stress the coral.
- Placement: Position in the middle to lower regions of the tank where lighting and flow conditions are stable.
- Spacing: Provide adequate space from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive sweeper tentacle contact, as Euphyllia species can be territorial.
- Diet: Primarily photosynthetic but benefits from occasional feeding of meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or specialised coral foods to promote growth and vibrancy.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable reef conditions: temperature 24-26°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, calcium 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm.
Compatibility and Reef Safety
This coral is reef safe with adequate spacing but can exhibit aggression towards neighbouring corals via sweeper tentacles. Careful placement and monitoring are essential to maintain harmony in mixed reef systems.
Additional Information
Origin: Tank-bred in controlled aquaculture facilities, ensuring sustainable sourcing and acclimatisation to captive conditions.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 30 cm per head under optimal conditions.
Minimum Tank Size: Recommended for tanks of 90 litres (approximately 24 gallons) or larger to provide sufficient space and stable water quality.
