Euphyllia glabrescens, commonly known as the Cotton Candy coral, is a spectacular large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its long, flowing tentacles and vibrant colours. This large specimen is perfect for marine aquarists looking to add movement and texture to their reef tanks.
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to support healthy growth and vibrant coloration. LED or T5 lighting systems are ideal, ensuring the coral receives sufficient light without causing bleaching.
Water Flow: Provide gentle to moderate water flow to allow the tentacles to sway naturally without being damaged by strong currents. This also helps prevent detritus accumulation around the coral.
Placement: Position the coral in a location with adequate space to prevent contact with neighbouring corals, as Euphyllia species can exhibit aggressive sweeper tentacles. Mid to lower levels of the aquarium are suitable, depending on lighting intensity.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals to prevent stinging and tissue damage.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from occasional feeding of meaty foods such as brine shrimp or specialised coral foods to promote growth.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters with regular testing and water changes. Ideal parameters include temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and stable alkalinity and calcium levels.
