Euphyllia cristata, commonly known as the Gold Torch coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its flowing, golden tentacles that add dynamic movement and colour to reef aquariums.
This medium-sized specimen is suitable for marine hobbyists with some experience in coral husbandry. It thrives under moderate lighting and moderate water flow, making it a versatile choice for many reef setups.
Care Requirements
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to maintain vibrant coloration without causing stress. LED, T5, or metal halide lighting systems are suitable.
- Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow helps keep the coral healthy by preventing detritus buildup while avoiding damage to its delicate polyps.
- Placement: Position the Gold Torch coral in a location with enough space to allow its tentacles to extend without touching neighbouring corals, as it can exhibit aggressive behaviour through sweeper tentacles.
- Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing from other corals to prevent stinging and competition.
Additional Husbandry Notes
Maintain stable water parameters typical for reef aquariums: temperature 24-26°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels. Regular feeding of meaty foods such as brine shrimp or specialised coral foods can promote growth and vibrancy.
Due to its moderate care level, the Gold Torch coral is best suited to aquarists who have some experience maintaining LPS corals and stable reef systems.
