Cynarina spp. are large polyp stony (LPS) corals belonging to the Mussidae family, prized for their vibrant colours and distinctive fleshy polyps. This premium large specimen is an excellent addition to mature reef aquariums, offering both visual appeal and moderate care requirements.
Care and Husbandry
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, such as LED or T5 fixtures, to support healthy growth without causing bleaching.
- Water Flow: Low to moderate, indirect water movement is ideal to prevent tissue damage and promote polyp extension.
- Placement: Position on the substrate or lower rockwork with adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to avoid aggressive interactions.
- Feeding: While photosynthetic, Cynarina spp. benefit from supplemental feeding of meaty foods like mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-26°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels.
Compatibility and Reef Safety
This coral is reef safe with adequate spacing, as it can extend sweeper tentacles that may sting neighbouring corals. It is generally peaceful towards fish and invertebrates.
Additional Notes
Due to their size and care needs, large Cynarina spp. are best suited to intermediate or advanced hobbyists with established reef systems. Regular monitoring and maintenance will ensure vibrant health and longevity.
