Coris gaimard, commonly known as the Yellowtail Wrasse, is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its vibrant colours and dynamic behaviour. This medium-sized wrasse is an excellent addition to a well-established marine aquarium, offering both beauty and activity.
Appearance: Coris gaimard displays a striking pattern of bright colours including blues, oranges, and yellows, with a distinctive yellow tail. Its vivid markings make it a standout specimen in any marine setup.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards similar species or smaller wrasses. It is best housed with other semi-aggressive or peaceful fish. Avoid keeping with very small or timid species to prevent stress.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Coris gaimard thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock to offer hiding spots and foraging opportunities, mimicking its natural reef environment.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to keep water quality high.
Additional Care: Coris gaimard is a burrowing species; ensure the substrate is deep enough and composed of fine sand to allow natural digging behaviour. This also helps reduce stress and promotes natural activity.
