Chrysiptera starcki, commonly known as Starck’s Damselfish, is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its vivid blue colouring and robust nature. This species is suitable for both beginner and experienced hobbyists, provided its care requirements are met.
Temperament and Compatibility: Starck’s Damselfish is moderately territorial and can exhibit aggression, especially in smaller tanks or when housed with similarly sized or shaped fish. It is best kept with other semi-aggressive or peaceful species, avoiding overly docile or very timid tankmates. Suitable tank companions include larger damselfish, wrasses, and tangs.
Diet: This species is omnivorous and accepts a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and reduce territorial disputes. The aquarium should be well-established with live rock for hiding and grazing.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally considered reef safe, Starck’s Damselfish may nip at coral polyps or small invertebrates, especially if underfed or stressed. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Origin: Native to the Western Pacific Ocean, including areas around Australia and Papua New Guinea.
