Blastomussa wellsi (Red) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vibrant red coloration and fleshy polyps. This medium-sized specimen features 6-7 heads, making it an excellent addition to established reef tanks.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to maintain optimal colour and health. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water movement is ideal, ensuring the coral’s polyps can extend fully without being damaged by strong currents.
Placement: Position the coral on a stable substrate or rockwork in the lower to middle areas of the aquarium. Provide adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggression and allow for polyp expansion.
Care Level: Suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals. Regular water quality monitoring and stable parameters are essential.
Diet: While Blastomussa wellsi can derive nutrition from photosynthesis via symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplemental feeding with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods can promote growth and vibrancy.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals that may sting or overshadow it.
This coral originates from Indo-Pacific reef environments and can reach a maximum size of approximately 10 cm per head under optimal conditions.
