Acropora spp. (Coral Sea) – Extra Large are striking small polyp stony (SPS) corals prized for their intricate branching structures and vibrant colours. Originating from the Coral Sea, these corals are suitable for experienced aquarists due to their specific husbandry needs.
Lighting: These corals require intense lighting, preferably from high-quality LED, metal halide, or T5 fixtures, to support their photosynthetic zooxanthellae. Aim for a PAR range of 250-400 µmol/m²/s.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong, turbulent water flow is essential to ensure proper gas exchange and to prevent detritus accumulation on the coral surface.
Placement: Position Acropora spp. higher in the aquarium to maximise light exposure. Provide adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to reduce aggression and ensure healthy growth.
Care Level: Advanced. These corals are sensitive to water parameter fluctuations and require stable, pristine conditions.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.025-1.026 SG, calcium 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm.
Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Acropora spp. benefit from supplemental feeding with fine particulate foods such as phytoplankton or specialised coral foods.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution; ensure sufficient space to prevent coral warfare. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or those with long sweeper tentacles.
