Acropora spp. (Coral Sea) Ultra Special Selected – Extra Extra Large is a stunning addition to any mature reef aquarium. Sourced from the Coral Sea, this ultra special selected specimen represents some of the finest SPS corals available, prized for their intricate branching and vibrant colours.
Care Level: This coral is best suited to experienced aquarists due to its sensitivity and specific husbandry requirements.
Lighting Requirements: Acropora spp. require high-intensity lighting, ideally provided by metal halide, T5, or high-quality LED systems designed for reef tanks. Aim for PAR values between 250-400 µmol/m²/s to support optimal photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Strong, turbulent water flow is essential to mimic natural reef conditions and prevent detritus accumulation. Use multiple powerheads or wave makers to create randomised currents.
Placement: Position this coral in the upper to middle regions of the tank where lighting and flow are strongest. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggression and allow for growth.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic, Acropora spp. benefit from stable water parameters and may also absorb dissolved organics and planktonic foods. Supplementary feeding with coral foods such as phytoplankton or specialised SPS coral feeds can enhance growth.
Reef Safety: Yes, with adequate spacing. Acropora corals are generally reef safe but can engage in chemical warfare or overgrow nearby corals if placed too closely.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to their growth and care requirements, a minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to maintain stable water conditions.
Origin: Coral Sea.
Maximum Size: Variable depending on species and growth conditions; can reach substantial colony sizes over time.
Regular water testing and maintenance of stable parameters (temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.025-1.026, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, calcium 400-450 ppm, magnesium 1250-1350 ppm) are critical for success.
