The Acanthurus olivaceus, commonly known as the Olive Surgeonfish, is a visually captivating tang species prized for its olive-green colouring and characteristic sharp tail spine. This extra large specimen is perfect for advanced hobbyists seeking a bold addition to a mature marine aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but territorial towards conspecifics and similar tang species. Best housed singly or in a large tank with ample swimming space to reduce aggression. Compatible with a variety of other reef-safe fish but caution is advised when mixing with other surgeonfish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, requiring a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) recommended due to their active swimming nature and adult size. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution – may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or coral polyps, so monitor closely in reef setups.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region. Maximum size up to 40 cm (16 inches).
