The Acanthurus nigricauda, commonly known as the Nigricauda Tang, is a visually captivating surgeonfish prized for its bold black tail and dynamic swimming behaviour. This extra large specimen is suitable for advanced marine aquarium enthusiasts who can provide ample space and optimal water conditions.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Nigricauda Tang is moderately territorial and may show aggression towards conspecifics or similar tang species. It is best housed singly or in a large, well-established tank with plenty of hiding spaces and swimming room. Compatible with a range of peaceful to semi-aggressive marine fish, but caution is advised when mixing with other surgeonfish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to accommodate its active swimming needs and territorial behaviour. Stable water parameters with excellent filtration and moderate to strong water flow will support its health and vitality.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Nigricauda Tang may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or corals, so monitoring is advised in reef setups.
Providing a varied diet, stable environment, and sufficient space will help ensure the wellbeing of this impressive tang in your marine aquarium.
