The Acanthurus coeruleus, commonly known as the Blue Tang, is a striking addition to any large marine aquarium. This extra large specimen displays the characteristic vibrant blue body with yellow accents on the tail, making it a visually captivating fish.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its size and active nature, it requires a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a very large tank with plenty of hiding spaces.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 gallons (approx. 700 litres) to accommodate its active swimming and territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or corals, especially if underfed.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate to strong water flow are recommended to mimic its natural reef environment.
Placement: Provide ample swimming space with live rock formations for grazing and shelter.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (16 inches) in length.
