The Acanthurus chirurgus, or Doctorfish Tang, is a striking species prized for its bold markings and active swimming style. This extra large specimen is suitable for experienced hobbyists with ample aquarium space.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, the Doctorfish Tang can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or surgeonfish. It is best housed singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding places and swimming room. Compatible with a variety of peaceful to moderately aggressive tankmates, but avoid keeping with very small or timid fish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and active nature, a minimum tank size of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended. Provide strong water flow and excellent filtration to maintain water quality. Decorate with live rock to offer grazing surfaces and shelter.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained environment.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. May nip at some sessile invertebrates or corals, so monitor closely in reef setups.
