Acanthophyllia deshayesiana (Ultra) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral belonging to the Mussidae family, known for its fleshy, colourful polyps and impressive presence in marine reef aquariums. This medium-sized specimen offers vibrant hues and a unique texture, making it a prized addition for hobbyists seeking a standout coral.
Lighting: Moderate to low lighting is recommended to prevent bleaching and maintain optimal colouration. LED or T5 lighting systems with adjustable intensity work well.
Water Flow: Provide low to moderate, indirect water flow to ensure the coral’s delicate tissues are not damaged while promoting healthy gas exchange and nutrient delivery.
Placement: Position the coral on the substrate or lower rockwork, allowing ample space around it to prevent aggression or damage from neighbouring corals. This species can extend sweeper tentacles, so maintain at least 10–15 cm clearance.
Care Level: Suitable for intermediate to advanced aquarists due to its specific lighting and flow requirements and sensitivity to water quality fluctuations.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from supplemental feeding with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1–2 times per week.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution; ensure adequate spacing from aggressive corals to avoid stinging. Compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24–27°C, salinity 1.023–1.025, pH 8.1–8.4, and low nutrient levels.
This coral originates from Indo-Pacific reef environments and can reach a maximum diameter of approximately 20 cm in captivity. Minimum tank size recommendation is 90 litres to provide sufficient space and stable water conditions.
