Overview: The Sergeant Major Damselfish (Abudefduf saxatilis) is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its bold colours and dynamic behaviour. Originating from the Caribbean, this species is recognised by its distinctive black vertical stripes on a bright yellow and white body.
Care Level: Moderate. While hardy, this species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament and Compatibility: This damselfish is known for its territorial and sometimes aggressive nature, especially in smaller tanks. It is best kept with other semi-aggressive or robust species. Avoid housing with very passive or slow-moving fish to reduce stress and conflict.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, and algae-based foods to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size is 75 litres (20 gallons) to allow sufficient swimming space and territory establishment. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef conditions is recommended.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium where it can patrol its territory and interact with other fish.
Origin: Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
