The Zebra Horn Shark (Heterodontus zebra) is a captivating addition to a mature marine aquarium, prized for its bold black and white striped pattern and unique appearance. This medium-sized shark is a nocturnal species that thrives in well-established tanks with plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic its natural reef environment.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a spacious tank to accommodate its active nature and territorial behaviour.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially with conspecifics or similar bottom-dwelling species. Best kept singly or in large tanks with ample space.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, molluscs, and specialised shark pellets. Feeding should be done in the evening to match their natural nocturnal feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) for juveniles, with larger tanks recommended as they grow to ensure adequate swimming space and territory.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May prey on small invertebrates and fish; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow to replicate natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of caves, crevices, and shaded areas for resting during the day. A sandy substrate is preferred to allow natural foraging behaviour.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 90 cm (approximately 35 inches) in captivity.
Regular water changes and stable water chemistry are essential to maintain health. Avoid aggressive tank mates and ensure a secure lid as this species can be an active jumper.
