The Zebra Bullhead Shark (Heterodontus zebra) is a fascinating species of small shark prized for its unique black and white striped pattern reminiscent of a zebra. This species is a benthic predator native to rocky reefs and sandy bottoms in the Indo-Pacific region.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This shark requires stable water parameters and a suitably large aquarium to thrive.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics or similar bottom dwellers. Best kept singly or in a very large tank if multiple individuals are desired.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds on a variety of meaty foods including crustaceans, molluscs, and prepared frozen foods such as shrimp and squid. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) for a small individual, with ample hiding places and a sandy or fine gravel substrate to mimic natural habitat.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Avoid overly bright lighting to reduce stress.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to replicate natural reef conditions.
Placement: Bottom-dwelling species that appreciates caves, crevices, and shaded areas for resting during the day.
Reef Safe: With Caution. May prey on small invertebrates and fish; not recommended for delicate reef tanks with small ornamental species.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 60 cm (24 inches) in captivity, though smaller sizes are more common in aquarium settings.
