The Japanese Bullhead Shark (Heterodontus japonicus) is a temperate water species native to the coastal waters of Japan and surrounding regions. Recognisable by its robust body, blunt head, and distinctive bull-like appearance, this shark is a captivating addition to large marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable temperate water conditions and a suitably large tank to thrive.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and slow-moving, the Japanese Bullhead Shark is compatible with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or highly aggressive species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, molluscs, and specialised shark pellets. Regular feeding 3-4 times per week is recommended to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its large adult size and active nature, a minimum tank volume of 600 litres (approximately 160 gallons) is advised. Provide ample floor space and hiding places using rockwork or caves.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperate conditions with temperatures between 14-20°C, salinity at standard marine levels (1.020-1.025 SG), and excellent water quality with strong filtration and moderate water flow.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient, replicating temperate coastal environments.
Placement: Best kept on the substrate or near rocky structures where it can rest and forage. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress.
Origin: Native to temperate coastal waters around Japan.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to approximately 1 metre in length.
This species is not reef safe and should be housed in fish-only or fish-dominant systems.
