Choerodon fasciatus, known as the Harlequin Tuskfish, is a visually stunning wrasse prized for its vibrant blue and orange coloration. This tank-bred specimen ensures better adaptation to aquarium life and reduces wild collection impact.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species is best suited for aquarists with some marine experience due to its size and dietary needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive. It may show territorial behaviour, especially towards smaller or more passive tank mates. Avoid housing with very small fish or invertebrates as it may prey on them.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and specialised carnivore pellets to maintain vibrant colour and health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef compatible, it may nip at smaller invertebrates or ornamental shrimp.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic natural habitat.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the tank, with access to caves or crevices for retreat.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in captivity.
Tank-bred Choerodon fasciatus are an excellent choice for hobbyists seeking a bold and active wrasse with a manageable temperament when housed appropriately.
