The Gymnomuraena zebra, or Zebra Moray Eel, is a captivating addition to a mature marine aquarium. Recognised for its distinctive black and white striped pattern, this eel can add both visual interest and dynamic behaviour to your tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a secure environment due to its natural behaviour and size.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful towards other fish but can be territorial with conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or with robust tank mates that are not small enough to be considered prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped fish, squid, shrimp, and specialised frozen marine preparations. Feeding should be done 3-4 times per week.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended for small to medium specimens, with ample hiding places such as caves and crevices. Secure lids are essential as moray eels are known escape artists.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may prey on small fish and invertebrates, so caution is advised in reef setups.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Typically up to 60 cm in captivity.
