The Acanthostracion quadricornis, commonly known as the Scrawled Cowfish, is a fascinating and visually striking species of boxfish. Recognisable by its distinctive horn-like projections and intricate patterning, this large fish adds a unique character to any marine aquarium.
Care Level: This species is best suited for advanced marine aquarists due to its specialised care requirements and sensitivity to water quality.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be shy. It is advisable to keep this fish with non-aggressive tank mates to avoid stress. Avoid housing with very small or delicate fish as the cowfish may inadvertently cause harm.
Diet: Omnivorous, requiring a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, supplemented with algae-based foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain stable water parameters. The tank should be well-established with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and good water quality with regular monitoring.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While not typically aggressive towards corals, the Scrawled Cowfish may nip at sessile invertebrates or corals, so careful observation is necessary.
Additional Notes: This species can release toxins when stressed or threatened, so handle with care and avoid sudden changes in environment.
