Plerogyra simplex, commonly known as Bubble Coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its unique bubble-like vesicles that expand and contract with water movement. This species adds a dynamic and elegant presence to mature reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal for Plerogyra simplex. Too intense lighting can cause bleaching, while insufficient light may inhibit growth. LED or T5 lighting systems with adjustable intensity are recommended.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow is best to ensure the bubbles gently sway without being damaged. Strong currents can cause tissue damage and inhibit polyp expansion.
Placement: Position this coral in a shaded or partially shaded area of the tank, preferably on a stable rock base with enough space to prevent contact with neighbouring corals. It requires adequate spacing due to its sweeper tentacles which can sting nearby corals.
Care Level: Intermediate to advanced. While hardy, Plerogyra simplex benefits from stable water parameters and consistent care.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from supplemental feeding of planktonic foods such as phytoplankton, zooplankton, or specialised coral foods to promote growth and vibrancy.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing. Its sweeper tentacles can sting neighbouring corals, so maintain a respectful distance to avoid aggression.
Additional Notes: Regular monitoring of water quality parameters such as calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium is essential to support skeletal growth. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or flow to reduce stress.
