Echinophyllia spp. are captivating large polyp stony (LPS) corals belonging to the Pectiniidae family. Known for their striking colours and textured appearance, these corals add dynamic visual interest to mature reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate care is recommended, making them suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is ideal. LED or T5 lighting systems providing a PAR range of approximately 50-150 µmol/m²/s support healthy growth without causing bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is preferred to gently remove detritus and provide oxygenation without damaging the delicate polyps.
Placement: Position Echinophyllia spp. on rockwork or substrate where they have room to expand. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggression and stinging.
Diet: These corals benefit from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week, alongside their symbiotic zooxanthellae photosynthesis.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with adequate spacing. They can coexist with other LPS and SPS corals but may exhibit territorial behaviour.
Origin & Size: Origin and maximum size vary by species within the genus; therefore, conservative husbandry is advised.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters with temperature around 24-26°C, salinity 1.025-1.026, and low nutrient levels to promote optimal health.
