Pseudochromis flavivertex, commonly known as the Yellowhead Dottyback, is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts for its vivid yellow head and contrasting purple body. This species is native to the Indo-Pacific region and is prized for its striking appearance and relatively hardy nature.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its territorial and sometimes aggressive temperament, it is best suited for experienced keepers who can provide adequate space and compatible tank mates.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Yellowhead Dottyback is known for being territorial and can be aggressive towards other fish, especially conspecifics or similarly sized species. It is recommended to keep only one individual per tank unless the aquarium is very large. Suitable tank mates include larger, robust fish that can tolerate its assertiveness. Avoid housing with very small or timid species.
Diet: Pseudochromis flavivertex is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality pellet or flake foods designed for carnivorous marine fish.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient territory and reduce aggression.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. This species does not have special lighting requirements but benefits from stable, well-maintained water conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with caves and crevices to establish territories and offer hiding places. This will help reduce stress and aggression.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 8 cm (3 inches).
