Anomalops katoptron, commonly referred to as the Flashlight Fish, is a captivating nocturnal species known for its distinctive bioluminescent light organs beneath its eyes. These light organs are used for communication and to attract prey in the wild, making it a truly unique addition to any marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a peaceful environment to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but shy and nocturnal. Best kept in a dimly lit tank with calm tankmates. Avoid aggressive or overly active species that may stress the fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised marine pellets. Feeding should be done during low light conditions to mimic natural behaviour.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress. The aquarium should have subdued lighting and plenty of hiding places such as caves and overhangs to replicate its natural habitat.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm in length.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally peaceful, this species may prey on small invertebrates and is best kept in fish-only or mixed species tanks without delicate corals or small crustaceans.
