Scolymia australis (Superman) is a medium-sized large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vivid, contrasting colours reminiscent of the iconic ‘Superman’ pattern. This coral belongs to the Mussidae family and is a spectacular focal point in mature reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate to low lighting is preferred, such as T5 fluorescents or LED systems with adjustable intensity. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Low to moderate, indirect water movement is ideal to ensure the coral’s delicate polyps are not damaged while maintaining good nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position on the substrate or lower rockwork to mimic natural habitat conditions. Provide ample space around the coral to prevent aggression and stinging from neighbouring corals.
Care Level: Intermediate. Requires stable water parameters and consistent feeding to thrive.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid placing near aggressive corals that may sting or overshadow it.
Minimum Tank Size: 90 litres (approximately 24 US gallons) recommended to maintain stable water conditions.
Origin: Wild-caught from Australian waters.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 15 cm in diameter under optimal conditions.
Regular monitoring of water quality, including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is essential for healthy skeletal growth. Maintain stable temperature (24-26°C) and salinity (1.023-1.025 SG) for best results.
