Trachinotus falcatus, commonly referred to as the Medium Pompano, is a visually impressive member of the Carangidae family. This species is prized for its sleek, silver body and graceful swimming style, making it a captivating addition to large marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate care is recommended due to its size and activity level. This fish thrives best in well-maintained, mature aquaria.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and sociable, Trachinotus falcatus can be kept with other similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or highly territorial species.
Diet: An omnivorous diet is ideal, including high-quality marine pellets, frozen seafood such as shrimp and squid, and occasional live foods to encourage natural foraging behaviour.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended to accommodate its active swimming needs and growth potential. Provide ample open swimming space with some hiding spots created by rockwork or artificial structures.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and good water quality with regular filtration and water changes.
Compatibility: Suitable for community marine tanks with other medium to large peaceful fish. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
Additional Notes: This species is not reef safe and should not be housed with corals or sessile invertebrates as it may cause damage.
