Ocyurus chrysurus, commonly known as the Yellowtail Snapper, is a striking marine fish prized for its vibrant colours and active swimming behaviour. This medium-sized specimen is suitable for experienced marine aquarists who can provide the space and care it requires.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Yellowtail Snapper is generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics or similar species. It is best housed with other robust, non-aggressive fish. Avoid keeping with very small or timid species to prevent stress.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its active nature and potential adult size, a minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended. Provide ample swimming space with live rock for shelter and natural behaviour. Stable water parameters and excellent filtration are essential.
Water Conditions: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow to mimic natural reef environments.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Yellowtail Snapper may prey on smaller invertebrates or fish, so careful consideration is needed when housing in reef tanks.
