Munida spp. are a genus of squat lobsters commonly found in marine environments. These invertebrates are popular additions to marine and reef aquariums due to their interesting behaviour and unique appearance. Available in various sizes, Munida spp. require specific care to ensure their health and compatibility within a mixed reef system.
Care and Husbandry
Munida spp. are generally hardy but require stable water parameters typical of marine reef tanks. A minimum tank size of 60 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and water quality. They thrive in moderate water flow and low to moderate lighting conditions, mimicking their natural habitat.
Feeding
These crabs are omnivorous scavengers. A varied diet including meaty foods such as finely chopped seafood, mysis shrimp, and specialised invertebrate pellets is ideal. Feeding should be done once daily or every other day to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality.
Compatibility and Reef Safety
Munida spp. are generally peaceful towards other invertebrates but may prey on very small or slow-moving tankmates. They are considered reef safe with caution, as they might occasionally nip at sessile invertebrates or small shrimp. Avoid housing them with aggressive fish or larger predatory species.
Placement
Provide plenty of live rock and hiding places to mimic their natural environment and reduce stress. They often shelter during the day and become more active at night.
