The Acanthurus monroviae, commonly known as the Monrovia Surgeonfish, is a visually captivating tang native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean. This species is prized in the marine aquarium hobby for its vibrant colours and active swimming behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a spacious environment to thrive.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish, so careful consideration is needed when housing with conspecifics or other surgeonfish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality herbivore flakes or pellets. Occasional meaty foods can be offered but should not dominate the diet.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Ensure lighting supports healthy algal growth if keeping live rock or macroalgae for grazing.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong water movement mimics natural reef conditions and supports fish health.
Placement: Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample space to establish territories. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species or other tangs unless the tank is very large.
Origin: Eastern Atlantic Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Reef Safe: With Caution. May nip at some sessile invertebrates or coral polyps, so monitor behaviour in reef setups.
Providing a well-maintained environment with stable water parameters, a varied diet, and sufficient space will ensure your Acanthurus monroviae remains healthy and vibrant.
