The Acanthastrea lordhowensis (Green) is a medium-sized large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vivid green coloration and robust growth. Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, this coral adds a stunning splash of colour and unique texture to reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for hobbyists with some experience in LPS coral husbandry.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is ideal, such as T5 fluorescents or LED systems providing PAR levels between 50-150. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow helps maintain coral health and prevents detritus accumulation without stressing the polyps.
Placement: Position on the substrate or lower to middle sections of the rockwork. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to avoid aggressive interactions, as Acanthastrea can extend sweeper tentacles.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution – maintain adequate spacing from other corals to prevent stinging and aggression.
Additional Notes: Stable water parameters with calcium levels around 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm support optimal skeletal growth. Regular water changes and monitoring of nitrate and phosphate levels are recommended.
