Duncanopsammia axifuga is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral from the family Dendrophylliidae, prized for its fleshy, brightly coloured polyps that extend during feeding and at night. This listing includes a cluster of 10 healthy polyps, making it an excellent choice for hobbyists looking to enhance their reef aquariums with a visually appealing and relatively hardy coral.
Care and Husbandry
- Lighting: Prefers moderate lighting conditions, such as T5 or LED setups with PAR levels between 50-150. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
- Water Flow: Requires gentle to moderate water movement to ensure adequate nutrient delivery without damaging the delicate polyps.
- Placement: Position on the substrate or lower to mid-level rockwork, allowing space around the colony to prevent aggression with neighbouring corals.
- Feeding: Benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods like mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times weekly to promote growth and vibrant colouration.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-26°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels.
Compatibility and Reef Safety
Duncanopsammia axifuga is reef safe with adequate spacing. It can extend sweeper tentacles, so ensure sufficient distance from other corals to avoid stinging. It is generally peaceful towards fish and invertebrates.
Additional Information
Origin: Wild-caught from Indo-Pacific reefs. Maximum polyp size can reach up to 3 cm in diameter. Minimum recommended tank size is 75 litres to provide stable water conditions and space for growth.
