The Arothron spp. (Citrinellus) is a medium-sized pufferfish species popular among marine aquarium enthusiasts for its unique shape and engaging behaviour. Due to the general nature of the species designation, care should be approached conservatively to ensure optimal health and wellbeing.
Care Level
Moderate to advanced. These puffers require stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament and Compatibility
Generally semi-aggressive. They may nip at smaller or slow-moving tankmates, so compatibility should be considered carefully. Avoid housing with very small or delicate fish.
Diet
Omnivorous with a preference for hard-shelled invertebrates such as molluscs and crustaceans. Supplement diet with meaty foods like shrimp, squid, and specialised puffer pellets to maintain beak health.
Tank Requirements
Minimum tank size should be at least 150 litres to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour. A secure lid is essential as puffers can be escape artists.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 24-27°C
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Salinity: 1.020-1.025 SG
Reef Compatibility
With Caution. Puffers may nip at corals and invertebrates, so they are not generally recommended for reef tanks.
Additional Notes
Regular monitoring of beak length is important to prevent overgrowth, which can affect feeding. Provide a varied diet and hard-shelled prey to naturally wear down the beak.
